POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery, Endoluminal) Weight Loss Procedure in Louisiana
A new surgical weight loss procedure is now available for patients who have not found success through traditional weight loss methods. It is called the POSE (Primary Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal) procedure and is performed without any incisions. Bariatric surgeons at The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana have become one of the first teams in the U.S. to perform this new incisionless weight loss procedure to decrease the capacity of a patient's stomach. The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana is one of only a select few sites in the United States to make this procedure available.

POSE as a Surgical Option for Obesity
POSE may be an ideal solution for patients who have not achieved success with diet and exercise and who do not want to undergo a laparoscopic weight loss surgical procedure.
At our Louisiana clinic, we have found that patients who have to lose 15 to 20 pounds can generally achieve their weight loss goals through the medically supervised MyWeight program. Those with a BMI of 35 or above may qualify for bariatric surgery such as the LAP-BAND, gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve surgery. Until now, there has not been an ideal solution for people in the middle – those who need to lose 50 to 75 pounds. POSE offers this solution and, because the procedure involves no incisions, POSE patients experience less pain, have shorter hospital stays, and reduce their risk of surgery-related complications.
How is the POSE Weight Loss Surgery Procedure Performed?
Typically, weight loss surgery works by reducing the capacity of the stomach or removing a portion of the intestine. Gastric bypass surgery, for example, does both, and patients lose weight by both eating less food and absorbing fewer calories. Unlike gastric bypass or LAP-BAND surgery, however, POSE does not require cuts to the abdomen. POSE reduces the size of the stomach though an innovative endoscopic method, helping diminish the feeling of hunger. Patients eat less, are not hungry between meals, and make healthier choices.
The POSE is performed entirely through the mouth, without making any external incisions into the body. Under general anesthesia, and using a small flexible endoscope– a video camera that allows the surgeon to view the operative site on a nearby video monitor – the surgeon inserts a four-channel tube created specifically for incisionless procedures. The surgeon then uses surgical tools to grasp the stomach tissue and deploy suture anchors to create multiple tissue folds in the stomach wall to reduce its volume.
