Donald A. Balder, MD, FACS, FASMBS
Donald A. Balder, MD, FACS, FASMBS, joins the Surgical Specialists of Mississippi after relocating from the Carolinas with specialization in Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery and Laparoscopic Surgery most recently from the Presbyterian Hospital system with Southeast Bariatrics and prior to that he was the Founder and CEO of Advanced Surgical Associates in Conway, South Carolina. Dr. Balder received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Illinois and completed his Surgery Residency with advanced laparoscopic training from the Brown University Department of Surgery in Providence, Rhode Island.
Dr. Balder spent the last 15 years in South and North Carolina where he established several Minimally Invasive Surgery & Weight Loss Programs. He led and developed the Weight Loss Surgery programs at McLeod Regional Medical Center and the Carolinas Hospital System from 1997-2004. Dr. Balder was the first surgeon in South Carolina to perform the laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, “incisionless” weight loss surgery, and single incision laparoscopic surgery. He served as Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Conway Medical Center from 2004-2010.
Among his many accomplishments are his designation as an ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons) Center of Excellence Surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation, the BCBS Center of Distinction Award and United Health Care and Aetna Center of Excellence Awards. In 2011, he initiated the Robotic Weight Loss Surgery Programs at Presbyterian Hospitals in Charlotte and Huntersville, NC; being the first private surgeon to perform successful robotic assisted weight loss surgery in NC (outside of Duke and ECU). He was an invited speaker for the IFSO (International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders) World Congress where he spoke on a variety of topics including incisionless weight loss surgery and imbricated or plicated lap band surgery in Hamburg, Germany in September 2011. He has served as Instructor for Ethicon Endo-Surgery, BARD Medical, and USGI Medical, Inc.
