This procedure is the bariatric operation of choice for 70% of US bariatric surgeons. The GBP has been performed for 30 years with a continuous evolution of technical changes to make it more effective and safe. This procedure is performed laparoscopically with a 2-night hospital stay in most cases.

This operation achieves its results by the creation of a very small stomach pouch that is totally disconnected from the rest of the stomach. This pouch is connected to a portion of the small intestine that is brought up to the stomach pouch from the lower abdominal cavity. This small intestine is then reconnected below to create the “Y” and allow the digestive juices (bilio-pancreatic bowel limb) to meet the food (alimentary bowel limb).

Patients have an early feeling of fullness followed by an intense feeling of satisfaction. Patients no longer have the cravings they had before surgery. They continue to enjoy eating, but eat much smaller portions.

The GBP is an excellent tool to help patients lose weight and keep it off long term. Most patients are able to lose 70 to 100 percent of their excess body weight with excellent long-term maintenance of this reduced weight. Best results occur when patients are adherent to our post-op dietary and exercise programs.
