Bariatric surgery, also know as weight loss surgery, is known to be the most effective and long-lasting treatment for morbid obesity and many related clinical conditions. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recognize several procedures as appropriate remedies in the treatment of clinically significant obesity. This list includes restrictive procedures (Gastric Banding and Gastric Sleeve) where weight loss is accomplished by limitation of caloric intake; malabsorptive procedures (Duodenal Switch) in which the body does not absorb the calories ingested; and hybrid procedures (Gastric Bypass) which include both restrictive and malabsorptive components.
