The American Society of Metabolic Bariatric Surgery has recently recognized several procedures as appropriate remedies in the treatment of clinically significant obesity. This list includes restrictive procedures (Gastric Banding and Vertical Banded Gastroplasty) where weight loss is accomplished by limitation of caloric intake; malabsorptive procedures (Duodenal Switch) in which the body does not absorb the calories ingested; and hybrid procedures (Gastric Bypass) which include both restrictive and malabsorptive components. The Surgical Specialists of Louisiana is one of the few bariatric practices across the country in which patients have a choice among all of these types of surgery.
